I think scientists care too much "only about their research". Once they gave advice to the governments etc... They feel they did their job even if the advises are not followed. I feel scientists should place decision makers in front of their responsibilities when decision are taken against advises from scientists or simply against common sense (for example by publicly stating that their advice was not followed). Because only few people are doing it, it is still risky for the researcher to do so without fearing professional backfire, but if it becomes generalised then this risk will reduce too and scientist might be better heard.

Understanding biodiversity, not only on very specific environments (like hydrothermal vents) but on a wide scale. Understanding the ecological and historical relationships between ALL deep-sea environments. Making science accessible to the industry (e.g. provide methods that are applicable at industrial scale, not only for highly specific academic research).
